Trivia[]

  • Paul used this bass from 1965 until 1989 when Elvis Costello convinced him to go back to the Höfner, though he still occasionally uses it in the studio.
  • He also used it once in 2002.
  • In 1967 he gave it a home-made psychedelic paintjob.
  • In early 1969 he sanded it down to the bare maple wood, later sanding it further to round off the horns of the body.
  • Prior to the Wings Over America tour, the bass was sent back to the Rickenbacker factory to get some work done to it, including replacing the old horseshoe bridge pickup which had stopped working.
  • It has serial number DA23, made in January 1964.
  • He has been photographed with a fretless one and a black 5-string one with a black pickguard and nameplate and no fretboard inlays.
